Food for Thought

I love food and like a lot people in this great country I’ve traveled quite a bit. I’ve been to the East Coast and West Coast as well as a lot of places in between. When I travel, most of the time with my family we make it a point to eat at places that are “off the beaten path”. I’ve found that this is some of the best food there is to be had. And yes, we’ve came across some of the worst. It is just like food at the firehouse.

Some of the worst food I’ve ever eaten was in a firehouse, usually ours. It usually is traced back to the rookie, there new and made to cook. The guys not knowing he has never cooked a thing in his entire life. You live and you learn. Some of the best food I’ve ever eaten was also in the firehouse. Not just chili, why do people always think of chili when you think of food in the fire house. Yes we make chili, but we make so much more. We have had meals that are some of the best around, from BBQ to burgers, steaks to chops.

Food is a staple of my department and just like any other department we have our cooks. These are the guys that the shift protects at all costs. No transfers to other shifts, no station re-assignments, no traveling to another station because they are short handed. Someone always steps up and takes this guys place in the rotation, this guy is the cook.

Tell us about your firehouse cook, better yet. Send us your recipes. Over the next several months or so we here at FireandAxes.com are going to be putting together a collection of recipes and compile them into a Fire and Axes cookbook. If your recipe is chosen, we’ll send you a copy. Wanna contribute, we’d love to hear from you. Send them to hq@fireandaxes.com.

Firehouse kitchens are a personal thing, personalize your firehouse kitchen, the one at work or the one in your home. A great way to do that is with a sign. Check out our selection of awesome signs at fireandaxes.com. Made right here in the U.S.A..
