We now live in a much different world

We now live in a much different world than many of us grew up in. For a lot of us the world we went to work in, in the fire service is much different than when we started. If you are a regular reader of my blogs you know that I’ve been a paid firefighter now for almost 22 years. I’ve seen a lot of changes in that time. At times it seems the whole world has gone mad. This life matters that life matters. I got into the fire service, as most of you, because I wanted to help people, all lives mattered. To me they did then and do now. I could care less about your color or political views, where you are from. You had an emergency, dialed 911 and we showed up to do our best to help, period. But the simplicity of that thought process is gone now. With it a lot of the reasons we became firefighters in the first place. We were the good guys, we were there to help and people understood that.

A few weeks ago I was in a staff meeting with my Chief and some others. We actually had a discussion about bullet proof vest for the men and women in our department who run our rescue companies, bullet proof vests, are you kidding me. This is where were are at. I have always understood, as should you, the dangers that are a part of the profession I have chosen, I know and understand the risks and train so as to prevent them if possible. But bullet proof vests, how do you train yourself to keep from getting shot trying to help someone. We now live in a much different world, and we have to accept these risks along with all the others. All lives matter, black, white, tan, yellow, all of them. The care and compassion extended in someone’s time of need by firefighters and EMS know no bounds, limits or prejudice.

We now live in a much different world. Stay alert and stay safe.

Until next time,

Captain K
