Aircraft Firefighters, Often Forgotten…………….
Aircraft Firefighters and Firefighting is to say the least…..different. It is something that most people never think of when you are thinking of firefighting. These men and women are often forgotten in the firefighting community. These are jobs that are very specialized and are not often used on a large scale, thank goodness.
I have a few friends that work at a major airport in the fire service. Some were once municipal firefighters like myself. They had a background in structural firefighting and made the move to the airport, they love it. Any training or experience I have in Aircraft Firefighting is from a small amount of training we have at our department due to our small airport. The training is intense, the gear they wear is different and there equipment is very specialized and BIG.
There really is no comparison between the Aircraft Firefighting crews and the Structural Crews, there just so different. The Aircraft Firefighters seems to get forgotten. There seldom thought of when firefighting conversations occur. I promise you this, they are certainly thought of when things go wrong. Jet fuel and foam, two things they deal with a lot. I for one salute the men and women of the Aircraft Firefighting division of our ranks. Keep doing what you do. You are not forgotten by us. Because of you our airports across this great land of ours are safe and protected. With the world we live in today your job is even going to get more difficult to say the least.
